Read about our student of the month here!
1) Tell us about yourself! My name is Myka, but my family sometimes calls me Myka Beth. I am 13 years old and I love singing, playing my ukulele, playing on my piano, crafting, reading, science and math.
2) What is your favorite hobby? My favorite hobby is either swimming or playing my ukulele. I’ve always loved being in the water, but I love racing against my friends at swim meets even more.
3) What got you interested in music? My parents got me a keyboard when I was six because as soon as I got to my grandparents’ house, I went straight to their piano. I did piano lessons in North Carolina until the pandemic hit when I was 8. Once it was safe for me to go back to school, I started piano lessons again. In fourth grade, I was taught how to play the ukulele by my music teacher at school. I played the ukulele up until fifth grade, but I never forgot how. When I was 11, my parents bought me a ukulele, probably because I was caught playing my older cousin’s ukulele. I now sometimes play the ukulele along with my piano.
4) What has been the biggest thing you've discovered since starting music lessons with us? I discovered that once you learned a bunch of chords on either the piano or ukulele, you can play almost any song because most of them use simple chords. It gets a little complicated if there is a lot of advanced hand movements in piano sheet music. Like in the opening of Hall of Fame, which took me months to learn, but otherwise, you can play any song with a few simple chords.
5) What is one of your life goals? My lifelong goal is to start my own engineering company when I’m an adult.
6) What would you tell a friend about the Music Academy of Acadiana? I would tell my friends that the Music Academy is one of the best places to learn a new instrument.
Make sure that you attend your lessons, show consistent practice and ask your teacher to
